Upgrading of Roads D1361

Province: Mpumalanga
City or Town: Langkloof
Project Value: R 16 000 000
Client Name: Department of Roads and Transport
INTRODUCTION
The project entailed the upgrading of 4.5 km rural gravel roads to surfaced roads. The project was split into two sections: 1) 3.5km of the D1361 from the junction of the D1361 with the Verena/Witbank road to the junction with the Langkloof Village access road and 2) 1km of access road into Langkloof Village.

CONCLUSION
The project was given further value by identifying and addressing the urban requirements along the section of road in Langkloof village itself. The client received a quality project with a greater value at a lower cost than envisaged at design stage. The surfacing has shown no signs of damage and the storm water systems have coped very well with no signs of erosion despite heavy rains. The project was a huge success as it not only achieved its goal to upgrade the local road infrastructure to Langkloof but it also managed to boost the local economy by providing job opportunities as well as skills development through training.
